I am new to aerospace and was wondering where does DO 160G come from? Is it a government standard?

RTCA is a private organization that has worked with industry to establish aerospace standards. RTCA takes input from the FAA and industry to establish new guidelines. Like aerospace, RTCA is slow moving so the standard does not change much which is both good and bad. DO-160 Rev G has been out since Q4 of 2010. I would not expect to see any changes in the next few years.

So RCTA is not a government regulation but it does hold a lot of weight with the FAA and the certification process. Every major airline that I have supplied equipment for has been subject to DO-160 requirements and testing.
